no, we are not there.
(or, where’s that commune i’ve been looking for?)
we are not where God is.
we are not where God is when we think a television is something we should Expect to have in a home. we are not where He is when we think that a home is not complete with a grand piano though no one in the home plays the piano. we are not where God is when our concern for the environment makes us think about ambience and our thoughts on development harken thoughts of fundraising for universities. we are not where God wants us to be when we avoid the low-income neighborhoods and think it’s unsafe to walk there during the day despite reports otherwise from those who live there. we are not where God wants us to be when we focus on infant baptism but ignore greed, hatred, permitting violence, and don’t worry about generosity and sharing and forgiveness.
we are not where God is when we are constantly judging others for their lack of understanding generosity and simplicity, though, either. we are not where God is when we condemn others as not being good enough Christians because they don’t “get it,” whatever our personal “it” is.
no, we are not there. we have so long to go.
